FAQ

1. Why is the event sometimes called the East Falls Golf Championship and sometimes called the East Falls Open?

In the 1920's and 1930's, the event was called the "East Falls Open" because it was open to both professionals and amateurs who were invited to play by the EFGA. Today, we officially refer to the tournament as the East Falls Golf Championship (in honor of the name that appears on the 1938 John B. Kelly trophy) but it's still commonly refered to as the "East Falls Open" by the participants.

2. If I've never played before, how do I get assigned to a flight?

First time players (excluding guests) can choose one the following options:

  • Declare to be in "A" flight, and be eligible for the playoff in your first year.

  • Ask to be assigned to a flight (if you submit a certified USGA handicap), and be eligible for the playoff in your first year.

  • Opt to compete in the "Guest/Qualifier" flight, and use your score in your first year to qualify for a flight for the next year.

3. Why does the morning round start so early (8am)?

Our afternoon 6-hole playoff format forces us to start the morning round early.   With 120+ players starting in an 8am shotgun, the morning round generally takes about 5 hours. Lunch runs from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. And the playoff runs through 5:30pm.  This leaves a little bit of daylight left over to allow for the possibility of a sudden death playoff if the A-flight playoff ends in a tie.

4. Am I eligible to play?

Current residents of East Falls, former residents, children and descendents of current or former residents are eligible to compete in A, B, C, D, E, or Senior flight. In addition, the EFGA reserves the right to extend this eligibility to guests who have demonstrated a commitment to the event for a number of years.

All other players compete in Guest flight, which is a low gross competition

5. Can I invite guests to play in the event?

If you are eligible to play in a flight, you can invite up to three guests and your guests must play in your group.  The EFGA reserves the right to limit the total number of guests in any given year.

6. I played in the playoff last year. Do I move up to the next flight?

This is covered by Rule 2 of the official Flight Assignment Rules as described below.

Rule 2 - Reassignment based on playoff results

This rule is designed to allow players to move up, but also makes it progressively more challenging to move up.

  • E Flight: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the playoff move up to D flight

  • D Flight: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the playoff move up to C flight

  • C Flight: 1st and 2nd in the playoff move up to B flight

  • B Flight: 1st in the playoff moves up to A flight

7. What happens in the event of bad weather?

If the golf course is open, the event will take place.  Please call the pro shop to ask if the golf course is open.
